Back in the third and fourth grades she used to clown around(周围的小丑) with her brothers in the branches(组织,机构) or peel(脱落,剥落) big chunks(厚厚的一块) of bark(树皮) off so they could slide down(滑落) the crook(弯曲) in its trunk(树干). It seemed like they were playing in it whenever my mom took us somewhere in the car. Juli'd be swinging(荡秋千) from the branches, ready to fall and break every bone(骨头) in her body, while we were waiting at the stoplight(红绿灯), and my mom would shake her head and say, "Don't you ever climb that tree like that, do you hear me, Bryce? I never want to see you doing that! You either,Lynetta. That is much too dangerous."
My sister would roll her eyes and say,"As if," while I'd slump(大幅下降) beneath(在...下面) the window and pray the light to change before Juli squealed (尖叫) my name for the world to hear.
I did try to climb it once in the fifth grade. It was the day after Juli had rescued(营救) my kite(风筝) from its mutant(变异的) toyeating foliage(树叶). She climbed miles up to get my kite, and when she came down, she was actually very cool about it. She didn't hold my kite hostage(抵押物) and stick her lips(嘴) out like I was afraid she might. She just handed it over and then back away.
I was relieved(宽慰的), but I alse felt like a weenie(蠢货). When I'd seen where my kite was trapped(困住), I was sure it was a goner(将死之人,无望的人). Not Juli, She scrambled up and got it down in no time. Man, it was embarrassing.
