As the industrializationadvances, labor division has become a quite common trend, which has long beencalled “specialization.” Though the concept of specialization has been acceptedby an increasing number of people, it signifies the upcoming tendency of thelabor market. However, some people maintain that it is better to have a comprehensivecommand of academic subjects than to specialize in only one subject. However, our real capability is confined in learning only one subject rather thanvarious kinds of disciplines.
One can not be anexpert in all kinds of academic subjects, because one needs plenty of time andenergy to obtain a deep understanding of a certain field. Take business as anexample, a business manager usually focuses most of his or her time onexploring the business world. People only care about whether the manager couldmake profits for the company, so there is no need for him or her to be a generalist. And we can not expect a dentist to be a good mechanic at the same time. It isgood to read reports about people who present more than one special skill, butthe deep understanding of one specific field is already commendable.
Moreover, therapid development of modern industry requires us to master various generalskills and knowledge of all kinds of subjects. An English teacher usuallyspecializes in preparing for his or her lessons and acquiring the skills togive a public lecture. In the meantime, he or she has to learn how to use acomputer, because applying a computer in class will boost the teaching effectand efficiency.
Generally people onlyspecialize in one particular field, but the changing situation of the worldcalls for a basic understanding of other academic disciplines.
