If you ask me what is “African Art” few week ago, I would not able to answer you this question. At that time, I have no idea what is it suppose to mean. But after I went to the exhibition of African Art in the Fine Art center, whenever I heard or saw the word “African Art”, the image of the FAC Exhibition would be in my mind. There are single twin ibejis, the chief’s staff or cane and so on, but what impresses me the most, is all of those collections are from one person- the UMass Alumni- Charles Derby. He has spent decades to collect art from Africa, although he has never been to Africa. He feels he can talk to them. In the exhibition, there is a large photo of the wall for Charles Derby’s collections, such as books, ibejis, local baskets and many other things that I cannot name of. Each of them has their own stories waiting for you to discover and their stories with the collectors. It is interesting to hear how does the collector collecting all these pieces and you will be amazed by how many art pieces does he have, all the art pieces shown in the exhibition are just a part of his collections, there are more in his house. He has been collecting the African Art for decades, but his passion has never faded away because he feels these art talk to him and he usually would have dreams about it. I heard this story from one of the exhibition staffs. There are a lot of people who are running large museums went to his house, asked him for putting his collections in the larger museums. But he said no because he wants to show them in a small exhibition, which could draw more attention to the African arts itself. I can feel his respect and love for them. By having the exhibition in UMass, it gives more personal connection to us. We would have the chance to hear the story behind the art. Even though I only know very little about the African Art, but now I have more respect for them, also with more curious.
