L48-2:
The silent village
/ðə/ /ˈsaɪlənt/ /ˈvɪlɪʤ/
Taking a path which led out of the town, we crossed a few
/ˈteɪkɪŋ/ /ə/ /pɑːθ/ /wɪʧ/ /lɛd/ /aʊt/ /ɒv/ /ðə/ /taʊn,/ /wiː/ /krɒst/ /ə/ /fjuː/
fields until we came to a dense wood. We expected the path
/fiːldz/ /ənˈtɪl/ /wiː/ /keɪm/ /tuː/ /ə/ /dɛns/ /wʊd./ /wiː/ /ɪksˈpɛktɪd/ /ðə/ /pɑːθ/
to end abruptly, but we found that it traced its way through
/tuː/ /ɛnd//əˈbrʌptli,//bʌt/ /wiː/ /faʊnd/ /ðæt/ /ɪt/ /treɪst/ /ɪts/ /weɪ/ /θruː/
the trees. We tramped through the wood for over two hours
/ðə/ /triːz./ /wiː/ /træmpt/ /θruː/ /ðə/ /wʊd/ /fɔːr/ /ˈəʊvə/ /tuː/ /ˈaʊəz/
until we arrived at a deep stream. We could see that the path
/ənˈtɪl/ /wiː/ /əˈraɪvd/ /æt/ /ə/ /diːp/ /striːm./ /wiː/ /kʊd/ /siː/ /ðæt/ /ðə/ /pɑːθ/
continued on the other side, but we had no idea how we
/kənˈtɪnju(ː)d/ /ɒn/ /ði/ /ˈʌðə/ /saɪd,/ /bʌt/ /wiː/ /hæd/ /nəʊ/ /aɪˈdɪə/ /haʊ/ /wiː/
could get across the stream. Suddenly my wife spotted a
/kʊd/ /gɛt/ /əˈkrɒs/ /ðə/ /striːm./ /ˈsʌdnli/ /maɪ/ /waɪf/ /ˈspɒtɪd/ /eɪ/
boat moored to the bank. In it there was a boatman fast
/bəʊt/ /mʊəd/ /tuː/ /ðə/ /bæŋk./ /ɪn/ /ɪt/ /ðeə/ /wɒz/ /ə/ /ˈbəʊtmən/ /fɑːst/
asleep. We gently woke him up and asked him to ferry us to
/əˈsliːp./ /wiː/ /ˈʤɛntli/ /wəʊk/ /hɪm/ /ʌp/ /ænd/ /ɑːskt/ /hɪm/ /tuː/ /ˈfɛri/ /ʌs/ /tuː/
the other side. Though he was reluctant to do so at first, we
/ði/ /ˈʌðə/ /saɪd./ /ðəʊ/ /hiː/ /wɒz/ /rɪˈlʌktənt/ /tuː/ /duː/ /səʊ/ /æt/ /fɜːst,/ /wiː/
eventually persuaded him to take us. The path led to a tiny

village perched on the steep sides of a mountain. The place
/ˈvɪlɪʤ/ /pɜːʧt/ /ɒn/ /ðə/ /stiːp/ /saɪdz/ /ɒv/ /ə/ /ˈmaʊntɪn./ /ðə/ /pleɪs/
consisted of a straggling unmade road which was lined on
/kənˈsɪstɪd/ /ɒv/ /ə/ /ˈstræglɪŋ/ /ʌnˈmeɪd/ /rəʊd/ /wɪʧ/ /wɒz/ /laɪnd/ /ɒn/
either side by small houses. Even under a clear blue sky, the
/ˈaɪðə/ /saɪd/ /baɪ/ /smɔːl/ /ˈhaʊzɪz./ /ˈiːvən/ /ˈʌndər/ /ə/ /klɪə/ /bluː/ /skaɪ,/ /ðiː/
village looked forbidding, as all the houses were built of grey
/ˈvɪlɪʤ/ /lʊkt/ /fəˈbɪdɪŋ,/ /æz/ /ɔːl/ /ðə/ /ˈhaʊzɪz/ /wɜː/ /bɪlt/ /ɒv/ /greɪ/
mud bricks. The village seemed deserted, the only sign of
/mʌd/ /brɪks./ /ðə/ /ˈvɪlɪʤ/ /siːmd/ /dɪˈzɜːtɪd,/ /ði/ /ˈəʊnli/ /saɪn/ /ɒv/
life being an ugly-looking black goat on a short length of

rope tied to a tree in a field nearby.
