“She never did so before,” at last, said Bessie, turning to the Abigail.

“她以前从来没有这样过。”末了，贝茜转身对那位艾比盖尔说。

“But it was always in her,” was the reply. “ I've told Missis often my opinion About the child, and Missis a-greed with me.  She's an underhand little thing: I never saw a girl of her age with so much cover. ”

“不过她生性如此，”对方回答，“我经常跟太太说起我对这孩子的看法，太太也同意。她是个鬼头鬼脑的小东西，我从没见过像她这样年纪的小姑娘，那么会装腔的。”

Bessie answered not; but ere long, addressing me, she said——“You ought to be aware, Miss, that you are under obligations to Mrs. Reed: she keeps you: if she were to turn you off, you would have to go to the poorhouse.”

贝茜没有搭腔，但不一会儿她对我说：“小姐，你该明白，你是受了里德太太的恩惠的，是她养着你的。要是她把你赶走，你就得进贫民院了。”
