Away from neighbors in a reclusive location,
A grassy pathway leads to your desolate garden.
Birds are resting on a pond-side tree for the night,
Hearing this monk knock on the gate in moonlight.
I cross the bridge and ease into the country hues,
The rocks seem moving under the wandering clouds.
I am leaving for now but will be back again,
For quiet times to share, I promise you, my friend.

A weedy path leading to your unattended garden.
Birds nestle in a pond-side tree for the night,
I, the monk, knock on the gate under moonlight.
Crossing the bridge I view the hues of wilderness.
Drifting clouds illude the rocks’ steadiness.
I have to leave for now but will return again,
To share the solitude, I promise you, my friend.

A path overgrown led to its ramshackle garden ground
On the trees by the pond birds were stirred at night
By the monk knocking on the door under the moonlight.
Over the bridge the wilderness opened up before my eyes
Rocks were moving admist the drifting clouds
Knowing I'll be back someday I left with no regret
For I shall keep the promise of fellowship in retreat.
