黄秋生曾这样评价自己：“单亲家庭，被父亲遗弃，以父亲为耻。中英混血然后家里好穷，哇，好精彩呀，我就差是个同性恋，就完美了！”
他把自己比作是一个不该存在的人，母亲的意外怀孕有了自己，由于怀孕4个多月才发现怀有身孕，妈妈怕孩子不健康曾想把黄秋生流产掉，无奈肚子太大做手术的风险太高了。就这样黄秋生来到了这个世间，他回忆自己的童年是不幸的，妈妈会将洗衣粉当成奶粉喂给他吃，自己口吐白沫才报警。
黄秋生是私生子，在他四岁时父亲抛弃他和相依为命的母亲，离开香港移居澳大利亚，开始母子俩还断断续续和他通信保持联络，直到黄秋生12岁，他们终于和父亲失去了所有联络。不久之后，和母亲相依为命的黄秋生将Anthony Perry这个名字改为黄秋生，沿用至今。
但是他始终没有放弃过寻找生父的努力，“我爸爸曾在信里说，如果我是一个good boy（好孩子），他就会帮我搞定所有的事。”黄秋生回忆说。所以他一直努力做个好男孩，后来又努力做个大明星，幻想着有一天父亲能在银幕上看到他，认出他，回来寻找他和母亲。
黄秋生从未放弃寻找自己的父亲，幸运的是在今年他在社交媒体上晒的和父亲当年的合影得到了回应，只可惜命运再次捉弄了黄秋生，父亲已离世但却找寻到了自己同父异母的双胞胎哥哥。对于这个突如其来弟弟，大卫和约翰表示在父亲生时从未提及过自己还有一个家庭，对于发生的事情一无所知。他们也从来不知道父亲原来还有这样一个大秘密。
坎坷寻父45年，试图拼凑出自己的家庭版图，虽然未能与父亲见到最后一面，但与两个哥哥经常来往也弥补了自己缺失的亲情。
