On the horizon twilight, a faint light
อาทิตย์จะลับโลกไป
aa-tít jà láp lôhk bpai
The sun quietly leaves the world.
พระจันทร์จะโผล่ขึ้นมา
prá jan jà plòh kêun maa
The moon will arise
หมู่มวลวิหคเหินลมอยู่กลางเวหา
mòo muan wí-hòk hĕrn lom yòo glaang way-hăa
A flock of birds flies in the wind, hangs in midair
จะกลับคืนสู่ชายคา ชายป่าคือแหล่งพักพิง
jà glàp keun sòo chaai kaa chaai bpàa keu làeng pák ping
Will return to the roof. The edge of the forest is home
แต่น้องนางไยไม่เห็นกลับมา
dtàe nóng naang yai mâi hĕn glàp maa
But the girl, the women, why don’t [we] see [her] come back?
จากไปตั้งหลายปีกว่า
jàak bpai dtâng lăai bpèek wâa
She has left for many years.
ท้องนาบ้านเราเหงาจัง
tóng naa bâan rao ngăo jang
The paddy field and home are so lonely
ลมหนาวพัดโบกโยกเรือนจนคล้ายจะพัง
lom năao pát bòhk yôhk reuan jon kláai jà pang
A cold wind blows, sways the house like it might collapse
ผู้เฒ่าตายายลงนั่ง
pôo tâo dtaa yaai long nâng mèr ror dûay jai lêuan loi
Elderly grandfather and grandmother sit down absently to wait with uncertain hearts
นกน้อยจากท้องนาราคาถูก
nók nói jàak tóng naa raa-kaa tòok
A small bird from a cheap field.
เธอเป็นลูกที่ถูกพ่อแม่ขายไป
ter bpen lôok têe tòok pôr mâe kăai bpai
She is a child that [her] mom and dad cheaply sold away
กตัญญูบิดามารดาปานใด
gà-dtan-yoo bì-daa maan-daa bpaan dai
Obliges parents no matter how much
แม่สายจากเมืองเชียงฮาย ต้องไปสู่สังคมทราม
mâe săai jàak meuang chiang-haai dtông bpai sòo săng-kom saam
From Mae Saai, Chiang Hai, to the lowest society*
เมื่อรู้สึกตัวก็สายเกินไป
mêua róo sèuk dtua gôr săai gern bpai
When [she] realizes, [it] is already too late
หมื่นพันที่เธอผ่านชาย
muan pan têe ter pàan chaai
Thousands of men have passed by her **
หัวใจเธอจึงเย็นชา
hŭa jai ter jeung yen chaa
Consequently, her heart is cold
สังคมกระหนํ่าซํ้าสองเธอต้องติดยา
săng-kom grà năam sam sŏng ter dtông dtìt yaa
Society has insulted her. She becomes addicted to drugs,
ไม่คิดหวนคืนบ้านนา ปรารถนาเพียงยาเมา
mâi kít hŭan keun bâan naa bpràat-tà-năa piang yaa mao
Does not consider returning home, desires only to be drunk and get high
ผู้เฒ่าล้มป่วยคนช่วยไปบอก
pôo tâo lóm bpùay kon chûay bpai bòk
An old person becomes ill. A helpful person goes to tell [her]
เธอจึงจากเมืองบางกอก
ter jeung jàak meuang-baang gòk
She therefore leaves Bangkok
หวังไปให้ทันเวลา
wăng bpai hâi tan way-laa
Hopes to be in time
เอายาไปฝากเอาหมากเอาพลูเสื้อผ้า
ao yaa bpai fàak ao màak ao ploo sêua pâa
Takes medicine to give them. Takes betel nut and clothes
แม่สายที่เธอจากมาเหมือนวาจาว่าสายเกินไป
mâe săai têe ter jàak maa mĕuan waa-jaa wâa săai gern bpai
Mae Saai that she returns to is like words blaming: “Too late” ***
นกน้อยกลับมาแค่ทันพระสวด
nók nói glàp maa kâe tan prá sùa
The small bird comes back just in time for the monks’ chanting ****
ใครเล่าเจ็บปวดรวดร้าวเท่าสาวเมืองเหนือ
krai lâo jèp bpùat rûat ráao tâo săao meuang-hăy-neu
Who is hurting, in pain, as much as the young women of the northern town?
สังคมเมืองไทยใครฟังเขาคงไม่เชื่อ
săng-kom meuang tai krai fang kăo kong mâi chêua
In Thai urban society, someone who listens [to her] might not believe
ขายกินหมดแล้วเอื้องเหนือ ให้กับชายที่อู้บ่จ้าง
kăai gin mòt láew êuan nĕua hâi gàp chaai têe ôo bòr jâang
The northern women are sold out to the men that tell lies.
* Mae Saai is peaceful in contrast to the lower society
**Actually, “Ten thousand”
***Because” Saai” in “Mae Saai” can also mean “late”
****Obviously, the grandparent has died. The monks are chanting for the death rituals.
