People become quite illogical when they try to decide what can be eaten and what cannot be eaten.

If you lived in the Mediterranean, for instance, you would consider octopus a great delicacy.

You would not be able to understand why some people find it repulsive. On the other hand, your stomach would turn at the idea of frying potatoes in animal fat -- the normally accepted practice in many northern countries.

The sad truth is that most of us have been brought up to eat certain foods and we stick to them all our lives.

No creature has received more praise and abuse than the common garden snail.

Cooked in wine, snails are a great luxury in various parts of the world.

There are countless people who, ever since their early years, have learned to associate snails with food.

My friend, Robert, lives in a country where snails are despised. As his flat is in a large town, he has no garden of his own.

For years he has been asking me to collect snails from my garden and take them to him.

illogical=il+logical adj. .悖理的；不合逻辑的；乖戾的not sensible or thought out in a logical way

eg：  It's utterly illogical, and yet you can find it everywhere in life, in many different cultures and industries.

eg: All in all, the experience made it hard for me to keep a straight face when people referred to whale as a "delicacy. " 总之，这次体验让我很难理解为什么人们会把鲸鱼当作一种美食。

repulsive  adj.

1.令人厌恶的；令人反感的；十分讨厌的causing a feeling of strong dislike; very unpleasant

2.引起排斥的；斥力的causing repulsion (= a force that pushes away)

eg: you would not be able to understand why some people find it repulsive. 你就不能理解为什么有人一见章鱼就恶心。

In France, where I lived for a year, I saw people eating frogs, pigeons, snails, and horses. 我在法国呆了一年，我见过人们吃青蛙，鸽子，蜗牛和马。

despise v. 1.~ sb/sth 鄙视；蔑视；看不起to dislike and have no respect for sb/sth

eg: That is a part of their DNA and the hard truth,no matter how much women may hate or despise this fact.

这一部分是由他们DNA所决定，女人再怎样厌恶或是轻视这个事实，都无法改变这个硬道理。

练习感悟：

 有些单词看起来很熟悉啊~比如snail repulsive 都感觉自己认识，但就是不知道什么意思，还是掌握的不够牢固。despise 倒是知道什么意思  ，但自己从来没有用过，在写作的时候。所以还是不够印象深刻啊~

读起来的话原文的停顿很不好把握。遇到不熟悉的单词总是比原文读的慢一些，练习时长都要比原来长了。
