The key is "Have you finished your task today" but not "How much have you finish today?". A habit is when you do a certain action spontaneously, you don't have to use your mind involved to think "whether I do it or not?".
To acquire this spontaneous reaction, you should repeat the action every day. So you must finish it day after day. The problem is that one day I can't finish it because I'm sick, or for some other reason.
Therefore the action should be very small. It is a mini task. The mini task will be impossible not be finished, like me, just 2 or 3 sentences written in English every day.
