【薄荷阅读】福尔摩斯探案 chapter11

【前情回顾】：

福尔摩斯紧接对离开的老太太进行了跟踪，但这位神秘人物却在坐出租马车的中途人间蒸发了。困扰之时，一群流浪小孩却找上门来，原来这居然是福尔摩斯的侦探小分队。同时，格雷格森探员却突然宣称自己已经将凶手绳之以法了，那么他是怎么“侦破”这起案件的呢？

“And how did you get your clue(线索)?”
“Ah, I’ll tell you all about it.
The first difficulty which we had to struggle with was finding out this American’s previous history.
Some people would have waited until their advertisements(告示) were answered, or until someone came forward and gave information.
That is not Tobias Gregson’s way of doing work.
You remember the hat beside the dead man?”
“啊，那你是怎么找到线索的？”
“嗨，这我得好好说道说道。首先的一个难题就是，这位美国男人生前是怎样的。这我们完全不知道。
有些人呢，可能是在报纸上发个告示，然后就坐家里等着答案，或是等着知情人士上门提供信息什么的。
但那绝对不是我Gregson大侦探的侦查方式。
你还接的那个尸体旁边的那顶帽子吗？”

“Yes,” said Holmes, “by John Underwood and Sons, 129, Camberwell Road.”
“I had no idea that you noticed that,” Gregson said, looking quite upset.
“Have you been there?”
“No.”
“Ha!” cried Gregson, in a relieved voice, “you should never neglect(忽略) a chance, however small it may seem.”
“恩记得，从Camberwell 路129号的 John Underwood 父子帽店买来的。”
