Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant's garden.
巨人有一个非常美丽的花园。孩子们每天下午放学回家，都会去里面玩。
巨人出去拜访一个朋友，一去七年，回来的时候，看见孩子们在他的花园里玩，非常地生气。他说，我的我花是我自己的，除了我谁也不能在里面玩。他赶走了孩子们，并在花园四周建起高高的围墙，并且立了一块告示牌：Trepassers will be prosecuted. 越界者将会受到严惩。
Then the Spring came, and all over the country there were little blossoms and little birds. Only in the garden of the Selfish Giant it was still winter. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom... The only people who were pleased were the Snow and the Frost. "Spring has forgotten this garden," they cried, "so we will live here all the year round."
然后，春天再也没有光顾这个花园。巨人的花园里从此只有冬天。因为没有孩子，鸟儿们也不再歌唱，树木也不再开花。唯一开心的，只是雪与霜，他们说：春天忘记了这个花园，所以我们将全年住在这里！！
巨人不明白为什么春天迟迟不来，他坐在窗户边看着外面永远白雪皑皑的花园，非常伤心。“我希望天气能改变一下。”他说。
But the Spring never came, nor the Summer. The Autumn gave golden fruit to every garden, but to the Giant's garden she gave none. "He is too selfish," she said. So it was always Winter there, and the North Wind, and the Hail, and the Frost, and the Snow danced about through the trees.
可是春天一直没有来。夏天也没有来。秋天也没有来。秋天给了每个花园很多累累的果实，但什么也没有留给巨人的花园。“他太自私了，”她说。所以，巨人的花园里，永远都是冬天，北风，冰雹，寒霜，及雪花，在树林间飞舞。
