In the summer of 1981, M started her life as a student at Princeton. As a  freshman, she found Princeton is extremely white and very male. Black students made up less than 9% of her freshman class.  Men on campus outnumbered women almost two to one. 

As a black girl,she feels intimidated sometimes. Gradually she realized that no matter white or man , they do not  smarter than her, they ere simply emboldened. Soon she adjusted and overcame.

In 1863,Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation(解放黑奴宣言），but one hundred years later, 1963,Martin Luther King, Jr delivered a famous speech "I have a dream", mentioned that "One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. "100年后的今天，在种族隔离的镣铐和种族歧视的枷锁下，黑人的生活备受压榨。100年后的今天，黑人仍生活在物质充裕的海洋中一个穷困的孤岛上。100年后的今天，黑人仍然蜷缩在美国社会的角落里，并且意识到自己是故土家园中的流亡者。”   in 1965 “ election rights act" officially end the African Americans' racial discrimination and apartheid in the voting actions and various public facilities.
