The 4 worst money habits I managed to break by 30
1. Avoiding my bank account: I set my browser to automatically open up to the login page for each of my accounts as a reminder. Now, I check my checking, savings, and credit card accounts on a daily basis.
2. Not tracking my spending or keeping a budget: Now, I’ve found ways to stick to a budget without even thinking about it. I have Mint, which automates my budget for me, and I also use two checking accounts as a budgeting tool. I have two fee-free checking accounts: one with First Tech Federal Credit Union and another with Charles Schwab. My paychecks get deposited into my credit union checking account, and I have all my bills set to be automatically paid from that account. Then, I transfer a set percentage of whatever is left to my Charles Schwab checking account, and that’s my spending money for the month. The rest goes in savings.
3. Carrying a balance on my credit card: First, I stopped buying things I didn’t absolutely need. I still use credit cards for the points but I check all of my balances daily, so I can see if my credit card balance is creeping up too high.
4. Ignoring my savings account: I started building my savings by opening a free high-yield savings account with Ally Bank. I got into the habit of paying myself first – that is, depositing money into my savings account before I pay any bills or do any shopping.
This Australian company introduced a four-day working week and nearly tripled its profits
Australian digital marketing company Versa when it instructed employees to stop working on Wednesdays. The news, however, was met with fanfare rather than fear. In doing so, Versa joined a small, albeit growing, list of businesses willing to take a chance in order to create a better work culture.
“When I started the agency 10 years ago, I recognised there was this problem, particularly with women but across the whole industry, that people were leaving to go client-side because they couldn’t make it work with their different commitments — whether they wanted to start their own business or have kids or whatever,” CEO Kath Blackham said.
It got to a point where Blackham realised it simply couldn’t go on the way it had. Rather than lose the four day work week entirely, however, she realised she could create a single day off for everyone. “It went so well that one month turned into three which turned into six and eventually more than a year passed, but to be honest, it’s always a trial. We make it clear to people that if it stops working, we’ll stop doing it and that keeps people motivated to make it work,” Blackham said.
“We work 37.5 hour weeks which is unusual in an industry that typically works 45-50 hours at a minimum. We spread those hours over four days and close the office on Wednesday,” she said.“The other days don’t start until 10am but most people come in earlier anyway.” Many employees use the time off to work on their own projects. Once a month Versa runs an entrepreneurs program where guests come in and speak. Other employees use the time to take a tennis lesson, spend time with their kids or catch up on errands.
Versa’s revenue has grown by 46% over the last 12 months and profit has almost tripled. People have become more efficient, we’ve got better staff retention, there’s less work that needs to be redone and less people needed to be replaced and briefed as a result.
Apple's Reminders app is about to get much more useful in iOS 13
Apple’s Reminders app is getting big overhaul in iOS 13 that makes it a much more capable productivity app. The new software update, which is currently available in public beta ahead of its launch this fall, introduces a complete redesign of the iPhone’s Reminders app. The new version of the app will offer more flexibility when it comes to organising reminders and makes it possible to add more context to individual reminders, like photos and documents.
The new home screen automatically organizes reminders into certain lists, like Today, Scheduled, Flagged, and All.
You can tap into each of these lists to explore the reminders you’ve created for that specific day, or ones that are scheduled for another date or that you’ve flagged.
You can also organise individual reminders into lists in iOS 13. The new Reminders app in iOS 13 is all about offering more tools for organising your tasks, and the new group feature is just another example of this.
The app will also support the ability to add photos, web links, and documents in iOS 13. When iOS 13 launches later this year, you’ll be able to make reminders feel more specific and detailed by adding attachments. You’ll be able to add components like photos, web links, and documents to each reminder, making it easier to jump right into a task as soon as the reminder surfaces.
If you’re creating a reminder with multiple steps or tasks involved, the new subtasks feature in iOS 13 will prove quite useful.
