What happens now Theresa May has announced her resignation?

Theresa May will stand down as Conservative party leader on Friday, June 7. The beleaguered prime minister announced on Friday morning that she would resign next month after failing to deliver the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union and losing the support of Conservative MPs.

Under the plans revealed on Friday, May will resign as Conservative party leader in two weeks time but stay on as prime minister until the Conservative Party has chosen her successor. Before then, May will welcome US President Donald Trump to the UK for his highly-anticipated state visit on June 3-5, and lead the country as prime minister during D-Day commemorations.

The primary reason for May’s departure is her failure to deliver Brexit. The prime minister has delayed the UK’s departure twice – Brexit was meant to have taken place nearly three months ago, on March 29 – and failed to convince MPs to back her withdrawal deal with the EU on three occasions. Parliament needs something to do until the end of July and it would be helpful to whichever leader is elected to have some of the legislation in place given the October 31 deadline.

The race – which unofficially got underway many weeks ago – is set to involve at least 10 Conservative MPs. Party authorities will be keen to install a new leader within good time to allow a new leader time to shape the Brexit process before the end of the six month extension due to finish at the end of October. In short, the new prime minister, whoever that may be, has an almighty task on their hands to fix Britain’s political crisis and it remains far from clear how they will be able to succeed where May has failed.

How one woman used her accounting career to drive social change

Emma Young believes that the smallest acts of kindness can have a profound impact on people’s lives. “Volunteering showed me that everyone has a story,” says Young, who started volunteering at a London shelter, serving meals and sharing conversation with people experiencing homelessness.

“When I moved back from London to Australia, I had a full-time job as an accountant but wanted to continue volunteering in the sector. I started researching the services that were available and found out that Nicholas Marchesi and Lucas Patchett had started Orange Sky. “[At Orange Sky], donor dollars need to go a long way. In the charity sector, making sure that every dollar is really nurtured, and that you’re running as efficiently as possible is super important.

“Because Orange Sky is young, we’re always looking at how we can run our services as efficiently and effectively as possible. All our volunteers and employees and supporters are passionate about helping our friends on the street and strive to do things differently and continually improve.

“Credibility and reputation goes a long way and having this designation adds extra credibility to my ability. If I worked for a firm, they probably would have paid for me to get my CPA, but I didn’t want to put that sort of pressure on our organisation. Orange Sky is very passionate about continuous learning and very supportive of me doing it, so being awarded the scholarship was a real positive not only for me, but the organisation and therefore our friends on the street.

“Working for a not-for-profit has given me a different level of connection to the organisation and care factor for how the money is spent and invested in operations. I think every sector could benefit from creating that kind of strong relationship between their employees and other stakeholders.”

Uber launches submarine rides at the Great Barrier Reef

Uber and Queensland Tourism have launched a next-level submarine ride service at the Great Barrier Reef and named it like a boss: scUber. If you thought Uber Black was posh, this is a whole different ball game.

The short-term service will give tourists the opportunity to win or buy a unique experience to explore the reef. Just like when you tried to order Uber puppies, the rides are in limited supply. The $3000 ride includes a helicopter trip to and from the reef for two people plus an hour ride on the scUber submarine through one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. You’ll get to see incredible marine life like giant clams while speeding through the sweet Queensland ocean.

Uber also announced it will donate the same value of each ride to Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef, which works to conserve and protect the reef. It will also donate $100,000 to support several of the organisation’s initiatives including their Reef Tracks program and the Great Reef Census.

The world’s most extensive coral reef system is being seriously affected by climate change. The reef is also struggling with an outbreak of coral-eating crown-of-thorns starfish along with large amounts of pesticide and nitrogen run off from nearby farms into the reef.
