《Who Moved My Cheese》 is the first English book I completed reading this year. Initially, my main goal was to improve my English, but after finishing this book, it provided me with a lot of insights and inspiration. It is definitely a book worth reading.
The story of Who Moved My Cheese? Was created by Dr. Spencer Johnson. It was published in 1998 to help him deal with a difficult change in his life. It showed him how to take his changing situation seriously but not take himself so seriously.
How to deal with change in your work or in your life? In this book, you may find the answers.
The book tells the story of four main characters: two mice named Sniff and Scurry, and two Littlepeople named Hem and Haw. They all live in a maze and search for favorite cheese as their food. It would make them feel happy and successful, too. The cheese is placed in a specific spot within the maze, and these four characters develop a habit of going there to find their cheese.
Cheese can be seen as a metaphor for what we want to have in life, whether it is a job, a relationship, money, a big house, freedom, health, recognition, spiritual peace or even an activity like jogging or golf.
At the beginning of the story, the cheese is always present in the Cheese Station C they are accustomed to. However, over time, the amount of cheese gradually diminishes. Sniff and Scurry notice this change and immediately decide to seek out new cheese. On the other hand, Hem and Haw become trapped in fear and resistance to change.
However, Haw gradually realizes that fear is merely an illusion and that change is inevitable. He starts to understand that he needs to seek out new cheese and courageously ventures out of the maze. Throughout his journey of finding new cheese, Haw experiences a series of psychological changes and personal growth. He is no longer afraid of failure; instead, he views it as an opportunity for learning and growth. He learns to adapt to change, embrace uncertainty, and seek new opportunities and paths to success. Ultimate Haw successfully finds new cheese and realizes that the journey of pursuing cheese is the true reward, rather than just the cheese itself.
The story reveals different attitudes and behaviors people have when faced with change by depicting the reactions of these four characters. Sometimes we may act like Sniff and Scurry who can adapt to change promptly and adjust their strategies flexibly, or Hem who denies and resists change as he fears it will lead to something worse, or Haw who learns to adapt in time when he sees changing can lead to something better.
"Who Moved My Cheese" emphasizes the importance of adapting to change, particularly in personal and professional life. It reminds us to face change courageously, pursue new opportunities, and constantly adjust our thinking and behavior to adapt to an ever-changing environment.
