One way to handle these problems directly is to place the thumb of the right hand one inch below the angle of the jaw while the middle finger is placed at the corresponding position on the other side of the neck. The scalene and sternocleidomastoid muscles are grasped and pressure is applied steadily while the patient vocalizes at a high sustained pitch.
Many times this leads to an agonizing screaming which develops into deep sobbing and one can hear real emotional involvement and surrender. The sorrow is expressed in clonic movements and the whole body vibrates with emotion. The voice becomes alive and pulsating and the throat block is opened up.
There are different sounds for different feelings.
Fear and terror are expressed in a scream, anger in a loud, sharp tone, sadness in a deep, sobbing voice, pleasure and love in soft, cooing sounds. It can be said generally that a high-pitched voice indicates a blocking of the deep notes that express sadness; a low-pitched, chesty voice indicates a denial of the feeling of fear and an inhibition against its expression in a scream.
However, it cannot be assumed that the person who speaks in a seemingly balanced voice is not limiting his vocal expression.Balance for this person may represent control and the fear of letting go by voicing strong emotions.
In bioenergetic therapy there is a constant emphasis on letting the sounds out. The words are less important, though not unimportant. The best sounds are the ones that emerge spontaneously. I will describe two of the procedures that can evoke them.
Every baby is born with the ability to cry out. It is the act
That establishes the newborn's Independent respiration. The strength of that first cry is some measure of the infant's vitality; some cry vigorously, others feebly, but soon most babies learn to cry loudly. Not long after birth they also gain the ability to scream. The scream is a major form of releasing tension whether owing to fear, anger or intense frustration. Many people use the scream for this purpose.
Some years ago I was on an audiepce-participation broadcast in Boston. One of the listeners phoned in to ask me how to overcome her difficulty of speaking before people. Without knowing the cause of her problem, I still had to offer some advice, and my suggestion to her was to practice screaming. I knew it could only help her. The best place to scream is in a car on a highway with the windows closed. The noise of the traffic is so great that no one could possibly hear. When I finished making this suggestion, I received another phone call. This was from a man who was listening to the program. He said that he was a salesman and that at the end of a day he felt tense and held in from his work. He did not want to return home in this state. The best way he had found to relieve it was to scream in his car. He said it helped greatly, and he was surprised anyone else had thought of it. Since then, I have had results.several people tell me they have used this technique with similar
