    Words and expressions

1.Where a certain occupation has both a masculine and a feminineform, look for a generic substitute.

masculine: having qualities considered to be typical of men or of what men do

仿写: Hunting was a typically masculine occupation.

    2. Countless sins can be erased by such small changes.

    erase:to remove writing from paper

仿写: Some of the names had been accidentally erased.

    3. The point is that clear writing is the result of a lot of tinkering.

tinker: to make small changes to something in order to repair it or make it work better

仿写: Congress has been tinkering with the legislation.

    4. The name lingering in thereader’s ear is Othello; the reader naturally assumes that Othello is smalland  malevolent.

malevolent: a malevolent person wants to harm other people

仿写: He gave her a dark, malevolent look.

    5. I noticed that many reporters had fallen into the habit of trying to make the news more palatable by writing in a feature style.

palatable: an idea, suggestion etc that is palatable is acceptable

仿写: The truth, as always, is slightly less palatable.

    Reflection

今天读的内容是昨天的第十章的后面部分,包含了sexism, rewriting, writing on a computer, trust your material  and go with your interests. 给我印象最深的莫过于rewriting. As the author mentioned: I never thought of rewriting as an unfair burden; I'm  grateful for every chance to keep improving my working. 写作就是不断的打磨与重写,删掉文章中的多余,重复与不必要的东西。写作也不可能一蹴而就,希望自己在未来的写作中不断rewrite, 总会有提升进步。
