大家看到-ply可能会不经意想到一些副词，例如sharply （清楚地，突然地），deeply（深深地），simply（简单地）等等，

-ply作动词词根的时候表示翻倍，重叠，相当于英文的fold（叠起）。我们今天主要focus在这几个动词上：apply，imply，和supply。
- 先说apply：
apply=前缀ap+ply
含义：申请，适用于，应用于
She decided to apply for colleges that were near her hometown.
她决定申请离家近的大学。
The assumptions(猜想,假设) you made about one person might not apply to another.
你对一个人的猜想也许不能应用于别人。
解释：apply这个词有很多不同的意思，这里小编给大家介绍的是考试经常用的两个意思：申请和适用于。为了区分它们，我们可以看apply后面尾随的是什么介词：
apply for= 申请，而apply to= 适用于/应用于。
- imply=前缀im+ply
含义：暗示
I don’t wish to imply that you are wrong.
我并不想暗示你是错的。
Their failure to reply to our e-mail seems to imply their lack of interest.
他们没有回复我们的邮件。这暗示他们对我们缺乏兴趣。
解释：前缀im表示进入，所以imply在字面上可以理解为向内折叠，看上去像千层面，引申为一件事有好几个意思，也就是说人们在讲话的时候有时会暗示字面下的其他意思。
哈哈不经意想起了那个关于“意思”的笑话。“我只想意思意思”。“那你到底是什么意思？” (￣￣；)
- supply=前缀sup+ply
含义：供应（既是名词也是动词）
The government was quick to supply relief (救援) to the area affected by the hurricane.
政府迅速对受到飓风影响的地区提供救援。
The water supply in that village solely(完全) depends on an old well.
那个村子的水供应完全靠一口古井。
解释：supply既是动词也是名词。作动词时，supply后直接加被提供的东西，例如service （服务），goods（商品）等。
作名词时，supply可以跟在被提供的东西后面，如food supply，water supply，electricity supply（电力供应）等。也有一个短语：in short supply，意思是供应短缺。
