前情提要

王子猷雪夜访戴

王子猷居山阴，夜大雪，眠觉，开室，命酌酒，四望皎然。因起彷徨，咏左思《招隐》诗。忽忆戴安道。时戴在剡，即便夜乘小舟就之。经宿方至，造门不前而返。人问其故，王曰：“吾本乘兴而行，兴尽而返，何必见戴？”

这个故事估计很多人都不陌生，上周在作业的要求下，我试着从全文不曾正面出场的戴安道的视角，用英文重现这个故事。虽然效果不怎么样，我的英文水平也相当有限，愿意看完的读者权当消遣好了。

A snowy night at Shan.

Dai Andao waked up from a distant dream.The reflected light of snow cast shadows on the seriously closed door. He got up and ordered his servant to fetch wine. The ground of the courtyard had been covered with thick snow. The world was pure and cold.

He drank and thought how many times had he refused the invitation from the officials. The poem “Seeking Recluses” by Zuo Si struck him and the lines naturally flew out of his tongue. He recited the poem and suddenly recollected his friend Wang Ziyou. “I want to see him. Yes, right now. ” Such a burst of yearning led him to the boat sailing to Shanyin where Wang lived.

A night later, he arrived at the door of Wang’s house. Not until he decided what to do next was the door opened inside by the servant who was very amazing but quickly asked him to come in.

“What a coincidence! My master just came back. Last night he waked up and drank while watching snow. After reciting a poem which I guess… is called ‘Seeking Recluses’, he suddenly decided to meet you and went by boat!”

“Oh, really? That must be a wonderful coincidence. But I did not meet him last night.”

“I have asked my master why he came back so fast. He said he just followed his heart and when he arrived at your house he thought it was enough so he did not knock and directly went back.”

Dai followed the servant through the courtyard and could not help smiling for his tacit understanding with his friend. He also just followed his heart. Once the interest is achieved during the way, it is no longer necessary to indeed realize the goal. If the servant did not open the door exactly, maybe he would not knock either!
