The table illustrates how the proportion of adults who took public transport for commuting or study changed in seven different Australian cities from 1996 to 2006.
It is noticeable that the percentage of adult citizens taking public transport in Brisbane and Canberra saw the most dramatic change (33%) throughout this period but showed an opposite trend. While both cities’ figure stood at 12% in 1996, it increased to 15% in Brisbane and the proportion declined considerably to 8% in Canberra, which accounted for the smallest among all the cites in 2006. On the contrary, the decade witnessed the least change for the number of Melbourne, with only a growth of 9%.
In terms of other cities, public transport gained more popularity in Sydney, with the percentage increasing from 23% to 26%, which always occupied the largest in this period. Similarly, the figure for Adelaide and Perth showed an upward tendency, whereas the counterpart in Hobart suffered a substantial decrease, dropping from 11% to 9%.
Overall, taking public transport for working or study became popular in most cities of Australia except for Hobart and Canberra.(184 words)

The traditional value about a clear gender division within the home and the workplace has been eroded, as a growing number of females become the breadwinners and males are the housework undertakers. There are several factors contributing to this trend and I believe its outcomes are positive.
The role shift can be traceable to both family and social aspects. On a family’s economic level, women’s equal access to education renders them comparable to males in the job market. Once men lose jobs in economic recession and fail to find new employment, it does not make financial sense for them to return to work if their spouse is higher earner. Consequently, an increasing number of fathers choose to be responsible for raising children at home. From a social perspective, advances in technology and automation have reduced the need for strenuous manual labor, meaning that service industries such as investment banking and consulting spring up globally and tend to favor female employees. Thus, now that the gender gap is narrowing in terms of workplace performance, people are willing to adopt an open-minded attitude towards stay-at-home fathers.
In my opinion, the change of parental roles brings many benefits. Firstly, a closely-knit family may be built based on the mutual understanding between parents because women can perceive men’s previous hardship of supporting families while males can also experience the onerous duty of child-rearing. Secondly, more women are likely to participate in workplace to achieve successful career, which makes the competition in the workplace more transparent regardless of gender differences.
In conclusion, family income and social progress result in the parental role shift. The trend that striking a balance between work and family commitments lies in a couple’s preference is positive.(286 words)
