伍尔夫《一间属于自己的房间》的首段在谋篇方面采用的是论文的架构，那么她在选词、造句方面采用了什么策略？营造了怎么样的一种氛围和腔调呢？为下文埋下了什么伏笔呢？我们一起来看一下。
一、语言风格
1. 选词
作者使用的词语偏向日常，简单易懂。比如，作者使用ask而不是invite，but 而不是however 或者 whereas等。
2. 句法
句子不长，中间用插入语，逗号或者分号，这样的处理方式，给人一种对话感。
从开头两句我们就能体会得到这种感觉：
BUT，YOU MAY SAY, we asked you to speak aboutwomen and fiction—what has that got to with a room of once own? I will try to explain.
再如：When youasked me to speak about women and fictionI sat down on the banks of ariver and began to wonde rwhat the words meant.
The title women and fiction might mean , and you may have meant it to mean , women andwhat they are like……
此外，多处用了转折词“but" , 文章起落有致，生动。
三、叙述氛围和腔调
作者叙述语气平静温和，暗含轻柔的幽默讽刺。
“the first duty of a lecturer – to hand you after an hour’s discourse a nugget of pure truth to wrap up between the pages of your notebooks and keep on the mantelpiece forever.” 在这句话里，作者在暗讽所谓“the first duty of a lecturer演讲者的首要职责”的无意义，这样给出的所谓真理，是存在纸面上，被束之高阁，摆在壁炉上，装门面的无用之物。
而伍尔夫希望能够从日常生活和个人心智层面，激发读者的独立思考，有所启发。
“to tell you the story of the two days that preceded my coming here –how , bowed down by theweight of the subject which you have laid upon my shoulders , I pondered it , and made it work in and out of my daily life.”
不难看出，伍尔夫在首段就使用大量的隐喻。其中有些隐喻在书中反复出现，成了这部作品的母题(motif )，它们具有特殊的象征意义。
四、母题(motif )
第三句“When you asked me to speak about women and fiction I sat down on the banks of a river and began to wonder what thewords meant.”
为什么“我”是坐在river河边思考，而不是花园里或者是海边？作者显然有她的用意，river这个词在全文反复出现，此外还有room房间和money钱（包括金子、英镑）。这些象征性意象都有多重性指向，也是我们理解作者观点的关键性意象，有点像我们中文里的“题眼”。
不难发现，所有这些特点，都具有邀约性，邀请读者的积极参与。首先对话感的语言风格，给读者一种亲切感，其次作者高妙的幽默嘲讽，创作了轻松愉快的氛围，同时也带来深刻性。小说手法和大量隐喻的使用，不但激发读者的情感共鸣，赋予文本深意，同时也邀请读者深入思考，与文本互动，得出属于自己的结论或者感悟。这是与作者的主旨完全契合，让我不得不惊叹作者文思笔墨的精妙。
