Interjections

We use interjections to express emotions such as pleasure, surprise, shock and disgust. Most interjections are just sounds, rather than actual words, and come at the beginning or at the end of what we say. Interjections are more common in speaking than in writing.

Oh

Expresses surprise, realization, or wonder.

"Oh!" she exclaimed, realizing she'd forgotten her keys.

Oh, I didn’t know that.

Ah

Conveys understanding, satisfaction, or relief.

"Ah, I see what you mean now," he said thoughtfully.

Wow

Shows deep impression, amazement, or admiration.

"Wow, that sunset is incredible!" she cried.

Ouch

A quick cry of pain or physical discomfort.

Ouch, it stings.

Hey

Used to get someone's attention or as a casual greeting.

"Hey, wait for me!" she called out to her friend.

Oops

Expresses a minor mistake or blunder.

"Oops, I dropped my phone," she said sheepishly.

Bingo

Indicates success, recognition, or a perfect match.

"Bingo! I finally found the answer," he declared triumphantly.

Ugh

Whew

Expresses relief, exhaustion, or satisfaction.

"Whew, that was a close call," she said, wiping her brow.

Yikes

Shows shock, displeasure, or surprise, often used playfully.

"Yikes, that test was tough!" she sighed.

Hurray

Expresses joy, celebration, or encouragement.

"Hurray! We won the game!" the team cheered.
