My name is Lee Neng, I’m 23. Last year when I graduate from university, I choose to work in Africa, for the main reasons is that the salary is much higher than working in china, HR told me I will get 1600 dollars every month, but in china, the salary for me is only 600 dollars per month. And also I am interesting in the foreign life of Africa, so I signed the contract, as the contract said I will work in Africa for 5years and I will have 1 month’s holiday staying in china every year.
Until now, I have stayed in Ethiopia for 1 year. Now I am working in the south nation nationality state of Ethiopia. This is the most wild places in Ethiopia. I am building a road for their Sugar factory ,the place is near to Sudan and Kenya. There are more than 50 minority nations living here, such as the Suri nation whose women has big plate on their lips, and Hammer nations whose young man should jump over the cattle to get married with their lovers, every day I will see some tourists coming to these places. I have seen the misery life of native people, and also the sorrowful gun fight between native people and army.
Nowdays , there are so many chinese in Ethiopia, even the Ethiopia people told me, it is not right to say Ethiopia have 86 nations, we have 87 nations, one of them is chinese. So what about the life of these chinese working in Ethiopia ? I have a deeply feeling about that.
Most of the tourists from Europe and America, they come here for enjoying, but for chinese , they come here for work. And they can only stay with their families for a month every year, even for the project manager. in the dry seasons, in order to accelerate the project schedule, we will work every day, no weekend no holiday, only when the native labors enjoy their own holiday and refuse to work, we will have one day’s rest. Life for us is boring . In the daytime , we stay at project site, conduct labors to do work and discuss the quality with consultant, all we can see is yellow sand and yellow bush, , some times it will have sand storm, the sunshine is so heavy that we will drink 4 liters water every day. In the night, we are forbidden to go out , so we can only play billiards and watch movies on computer. The network is not available most of the time, only in the sunshine days ,the net work sign is very good, the velocity can be as much as 5KB/S, which is not enough for Facebook chatting. The last time of my sex life is 1 year before, so I miss my girlfriend in china very much.
This is a hard time for us, but even harder for our families in china. One of my fellow , his wife give birth to a baby, he beg off for 15days to go back china, after that he come back for project immediately, another fellow, left his wife immediately after their marriage,.
Almost 80% of the road in Ethiopia is built by chinese people, almost every road you drive on has a story of chinese. I hope my essay will let you know more about the chinese workers in Africa.
