Heracles是宙斯和一个凡人生的孩子，半人半神，但希腊神话与罗马神话都有关于他的故事，是非常著名的大力士。而他最有名的故事，是12件不可能完成的任务。
事情还要从宙斯的妻子赫拉，Hera，说起。赫拉好妒，所以一直看Heracles不顺眼。所以说服了国王让Heracles做12件事来证明他是世间最强壮的男子。Heracles自尊心强，就答应了。
今天读的故事，其实只写到了这12个任务中的5个。
第一个任务，是杀死一只叫Nemea的狮子。这只狮子不惧任何武器，几乎刀枪不入，但Heracles赤手空拳把它勒死了。
“First, you must kill the lion of Nemea. It is a beast that no weapons can wound," the king told Heracles.
Heracles hunted down the great lion. He strangled the beast with his bare hands. Then he returned to the kingdom .
第一个任务，是杀死九头蛇Hydra. 这条蛇有9个头，其中一个头是不死之头，永远不会死。而另8个头则更糟糕，因为砍掉一个，会长出来两个新头。但Heracles想也一个办法，他用一把威力强大的宝剑斩下了不死之头担进土里，并压上沉重的岩石。至于另八个头，他砍下之后，就用一根烧红的铁棍封印了脖子，以阻止它长出新的头。
True to legend, it breathed terrible poison. Its nine heads darted and snapped at Heracles. Bur the strongest man alive was prepared. Heracles cut off each of the Hydra's nine heads with a mighty sword. He buried the immortal head under the earth and covered it with a heavy rock. Then he sealed each headless neck with a hot iron poker. This prevented the Hydra from growing any heads back.
