        If you ask me what is my favorite activity, I’d tell you it is reading books. If you ask me who is my best friend, I’d tell you it is Mary Liu. If you ask me how Mary and Paul became friends, I’d tell it is because of books. Till 2018, the friendship has lasted for over 14 years.

      Relatively, Mary is a lively and optimistic girl. I am a sensitive and a bit pessimistic boy. Our different personalities result in our totally different ways of reading books. This doesn’t stop us from being goods friends. In contrast, it gives birth to a lot of happy moments.

   

      When we were in middle school, the books I read were mostly life stories. They were very touching, like “Letters of President Bush to His Disabled Daughter”, which told the story of how United States’ president Bush took care of another person whole-heartedly. The books Mary read were mostly very funny, like jokes and adventurous stories.

      Then the result was dramatic. After reading the books, I would weep and cry to Mary and tell her how touched I was and how grateful I was. Mary would try to calm me down. Mary’s “Please don’t cry, please don’t cry” didn’t make it any better. Then she would say, “I’ll tell you a funny story I read.” Listening to her story, I started to laugh.

      I made Mary consider deeper about life and Mary tried to make me happier.

      When we were in college, we both liked Jinyong’s gongfu stories. Interesting things happened again.

      This is what I said, “Do you think Yang Guo ruined Guo Xiang’s life? Because Yang Guo knew that he was handsome and attractive to young girls. He tried to make Guo Xiang fall in love with him, then left.”  “What results in the tragedy of Zhou Zhiruo? If a person doesn’t have a rich father and isn't not that smart, but pursues too much, it would be very bad.” Hearing this, Mary would say, was too sensitive and serious, concluding so much from a fictional book?

      Mary would notice that the art of how Jinyong name the characters. The names Lin Pingzhi and You Tanzhi were both meant for a smooth life, but their lives were full of disasters, not smooth at all. Do you remember the them, Lin Pingzhi from Xiaoaojianghu, Youtanzhi from Tianlongbabu. Li Mochou, whose name means no need to worry about anything, leads a life worrying every day, easily annoyed.

      I let Mary care about people’s hardship and Mary made me happy with interesting parts of the books.

      14 years is very long time. We’re both from very small villages, so small that there is no bookstore in our village. Instead of becoming a farmer, having little interests of life or thinking little about life like our parents, books guide us to Shanghai and Chengdu, two very big cities of China.

        The frienship will surely continue longer and longer. The two once 13-year-old little bookworms will become two old-bookworms one day.
