It is widely acknowledged that most of us live by selling things. For example, teachers sell knowledge to make a living while philosophers make a living by selling their intelligence as well as others. Even though it is easy to estimate the value of material products in terms of money, it is quite difficult for us to measure the value of the services with which others provide us. There are times when we are ready to offer everything that we possess to save our lives. However, it is generally believed that we might grudge paying a surgeon a high fee for performing precisely this service. They are the conditions of society that skills have to be paid for as well as goods are paid for at a shop. There is something for everybody to sell.
In front of this general rule, it might be an exception for tramps. In order to draw the attention of passers-by’s sympathy, the beggars almost sell themselves. Nevertheless, the real tramps are not beggars. They have nothing to sell and require nothing from others. When they try to pursue the sense of independence, they do not sacrifice their human dignity. It may be possible for tramps to ask you for money, but they will never ask you to take pity on them. They are purposely chosen to have a living in that style and have a fully understanding of the consequences. They may never know where the next meal will be, but they will never be afflicted by thousands of anxieties as others. It is because of the few properties, they are able to be free from moving from place to place. Due to sleeping in the open air, they are closer to the nature than most of us. In order to make a living, he might go hunting, begging or stealing occasionally. In times of real need, they may do a little work, yet they will never sacrifice their freedom. Speaking of tramps with contempt, we often divide them into the same level as beggars. However, how many of us could honestly tell that we do not admire at their simple life style and freedom from care?
