北国风光，                                                    See what the northern countries show:

千里冰封，

Hundreds of leagues ice-bound go;

万里雪飘。

Thousands of leagues flies snow.

望长城内外，

Behold! Within and without the Great Wall.

唯余莽莽；

The boundless land is clad in white,

大河上下，

And up and down the Yellow River.

顿失滔滔，

All the endless waves are lost to sight.

山舞银蛇，

Mountains like silver serpents dancing,

原驰蜡象，

Highlands like waxy elephants advancing,

欲与天公试比高。

All try to match the sky in height.

须晴日，                                                        Wait till the day is fine

看红装素裹，

And see the fair bask in sparkling sunshine,

分外妖娆。

What an enchanting sight!

江山如此多娇，

Our motherland so rich in beauty

引无数英雄竞折腰。

Has made countless heroes view to pay her their duty.

惜秦皇汉武，

But alas! Qin Huang and Han Wu

略输文采；

In culture not well bred,

唐宗宋祖，

And Tang Zong and Song Zu

稍逊风骚。

In letters not wide read.

一代天骄，成吉思汗，

And Genghis Khan, proud son of Heaven for a day,

只识弯弓射大雕。

Knew only shooting eagles by bending his bows.

俱往矣，

They have all passed away;

数风流人物，

Brilliant heroes are those

还看今朝。

Whom we will see today!
