The Rudolf Virchow Center / Research Center for Experimental Biomedicine of the University of Würzburg
offers at the earliest possible date a position as
PhD student (f/m/d, MSc in physics, biophysics or biochemistry)
for research in the field of
Superresolution Imaging
In this interdisciplinary approach we will develop an analysis platform based on Expansion Microscopy and single molecule localization modalities on blood platelets. We postulate that dimerization of the platelet receptors in diseased conditions triggers changes in the membrane organization and distribution of the receptor that modulate platelet adhesiveness independently of classic signaling pathways. Physical expansion of the small platelet by a hydrogel approach is one major prerequisite to map receptor clustering/distribution and interaction with other receptors and intracellular proteins over a large sample thickness.
The project involves the development of tailored expansion and advanced image data analysis tools. The overall goal is to provide a multi-color receptor mapping and co-localization study with single molecule resolution and minimized bias. The project particularly requires enthusiasm for biomolecular sciences, high-resolution microscopy, and computational image analysis.
The position is initially funded for a period of one year and will be extended in the case of a positive evaluation. The salary for this temporary position is commensurate with training and experience according to Collective Agreement for the Public Service of German Federal States TV-L.
Applications including cover letter, detailed CV, copies of certificates, and contact information of two referees, should be sent as a single pdf file (no more than 10 MB) via email to katrin.heinze@virchow.uni-wuerzburg.de until 24th of May 201
Desired skills and experience
We are interested in a PhD candidate with a strong background in physics, preferably biophysics, or engineering or an equivalent level of professional qualification and experience. Ideally, the candidate has experience in fluorescence imaging / spectroscopy and quantitative data analysis. Experience in superresolution and single-molecule imaging is desired, however not a prerequisite.
About the employer
The successful candidate will work at the Rudolf Virchow Center of the University of Würzburg funded by the TRR-CRC166 (ReceptorLight). In an international and multi-disciplinary environment with strong expertise in biophysical research we provide state-of-the-art technologies, and the opportunity to enroll in the Graduate School of Life Sciences ─ an international graduate program. Female scientists are particularly encouraged to apply. Disabled applicants will be preferentially considered in case of equivalent qualification.
