    Utagawa Hiroshige is one of the most well-known artists of Ukiyo-e. This beautiful woodblock print of elegant women in the snow is one of a series entitled Famous Views of Kyoto. Hiroshige was an absolute master of his craft. In this woodcut he artfully picks out the women's kimonos with warm orange tones, contrasting them against the blues and greys of the snow-muffled scene.

    歌川广重(Utagawa Hiroshige)是最著名的浮世绘画家之一。这幅美丽的木版画描绘了雪中优雅的女子,是《京都名所》系列中的一幅。歌川广重绝对是他所在工艺领域中的大师。在这幅木刻作品中,他巧妙地挑选出暖橙色调的女式和服,将它们与白雪覆盖场景中的蓝色和灰色形成鲜明对比。

    The subjects of Hiroshige's work were a typical of the Ukiyo-e genre, whose standard focus was on beautiful women, popular actors, and other scenes of the urban pleasure districts of Japan's Edo period (1603–1868). The popular series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Hokusai was a strong influence on Hiroshige's choice of subject, though Hiroshige's approach was more poetic and ambient than Hokusai's bolder, more formal prints. Subtle use of color was essential in Hiroshige's prints, often printed with multiple impressions in the same area and with extensive use of bokashi (color gradation), both of which were rather labor-intensive techniques.   

    广重作品主题是典型的浮世绘流派,其焦点是日本江户时代(1603-1868年)描绘美丽女子的“美人绘”、著名歌舞伎演员的“役者绘”、和其他著名都市风景的“名所绘”。葛饰北斋的热门系列《冨岳三十六景》对歌川广重的主题选择产生了强烈影响,但广重的创作手法却比北斋更大胆、更正式的版画更富有诗意和氛围。在歌川广重的版画中,色彩的微妙运用至关重要,经常在同一区域进行多次压印,并广泛使用色彩渐变效果,这两种技术都是相当耗费人力的。
