如果一项试验在试验场所由一组人员实施，该组人员的负责人或领导者，就称为主要研究者(Principal investigator, PI)。
在国际上，俗称：
主要研究者( principal investigator, PI)，也是我国通常所说的项目负责人，就是分中心的大主任之类的牛人。
合作研究者( co-investigator，CI)，主要研究者PI的主要助手。（一般简称研究者）
助理研究者( sub-investigator, SI)，其他参加人员，如护士、档案员、技师。
协调研究者( coordinating investigator，COI)，多中心临床试验中，负责协调各中心研究者工作的研究者， 在我国一般由组长单位的主要研究者承担，俗称大PI。
有些SOP把CI和SI都归为SUB-I。
Another CI（chief investigator）：
An individual who is responsible for the conduct of the whole project in the UK. Our policy states that the named CI should be a researcher who is professionally based in the UK, as they will be:
- able to supervise the research effectively
- readily available to communicate with the Research Ethics Committee (REC) and other review bodies during the application process and where necessary during the conduct of the research.
