A freshman tends to be bereft of familiar company,thus being disturbed by numerous uncomfortable feelings.University Freshmen,who have not grown psychologically mature,suffer from loneliness in particular.Here are factors contributing to university freshmen’s loneliness.
Since most students have just started their university life,their years spent on pursuing the undergraduate degree might be the first time to leave parents as well as the familiar adolescent environment.Therefore both psychologically and physically their need to adjust to the university life while homesickness would creep on their minds.My class supervisor once shared her own experience as a university freshman with the class.In her beginning of the university life,she as well as her classmates,especially female classmates,would cry at night in the dormitory because of the loneliness.Leaving the familiar company and having to adjust to the university life easily simulate the loneliness buried in their hearts.
Senior high school life tend to be consolidated while university life are likely to be diverse.Everyone has his or her own routine and live on his or her own regular basis.If a student wants to earn a high GPA,so he or she would best choose to stay in the library;If a student is pursuing his or her hobby,then more time would be spent in clubs and organizations.It turned out to be quite hard to find two students who share the same everyday routine.Spending plenty of time with an intimate friend is barely possible and without an intimate friends’ company,loneliness can easily attack a freshman.
Loneliness is a psychological phenomenon,but it can be affected by the external surroundings. The infamous student of Yunnan University------Ma Jiajue,murdered four of his fellow students because of their gossip and sarcasm upon him.He was not even a freshman in the university,but those gossip and sarcasm came outside from his fellow students eventually awoke the loneliness in his heart,which led to his cruel crime. In hie confession,he said,”I don’t have many friends...I’m despair,I’ve got no friends in Yunnan University...”The external surroundings blocked his mind and generated loneliness at last.
Though loneliness seems to be unavoidable for a freshman,it can be treated positively and turned into motivative energy. Beethoven created a fantastic music world in his permanent lonely,quiet deafness;Hugo finished his great piece of work,Les Miserables,when he refused all the social interactions and sat alone in his study writing his book.They both gained full concentration thanks to their loneliness.So,if a freshman encounters loneliness,the only ting he or she needs to do is to focus,to concentrate on his or her present work.At that time,the hovering loneliness might seem to be sweet and beautiful.
