A burned patient, a nurse, a sikh sapper and a thief without thumb, who lived in a shelled villa, bringing a sad love story, which happened during the second world war.
This is a novel which pace is very slow, always repeat the trival things until the last two chapters. the writer didn't showed you every thing at one time, who just drew a map of maze that led you to the deepest pain and happiness of love. you have to slow down to taste every word, to feel the fever of love and cruelty of war.
To be honest, I can't understand the story completely, which is full of various obscure metaphor, in order to depict charaters' affection, pain and hesitation among their affair, but I can take in the sadness behind the lines. However I don't like this kind of novel, using lots of monologue to explain plot.
At the end, the novel came to a halt, which gave a open ending, with coriosity, I would like to watch the movie adapted from the book that has been laid in my harddisk for several years.
