Not all habits are created equal. Duhigg says willpower is by far one of the most important ones as it helps us do better in all aspects of life.
You probably know the basics of good willpower already: eat right, sleep enough, and exercise regularly. But there are other, more uncommon ways to improve it. Here are 3 of them:
-
Do something that requires a lot of discipline. An early-morning regimen or stricter diet will force you to constantly delay gratification and thus give you more willpower to exert throughout your day.
-
Plan ahead for worst-case scenarios. Think about your boss yelling at you before it even happens, and you won’t lose your cool if it does.
-
Try to preserve your autonomy where possible. Autonomy is a major driver of happiness. If too much of it is taken from us, our willpower goes down the drain. Whatever tasks other people assign to you, try to put your own little spin on them. You’ll have more stamina to see them through.
Focus on improving these big aspects of your life over minor hacks, and you’ll develop great self-discipline in the long run!
