If you scan the text messages you have received in the past year, you may find a huge number of spam messages, either advising you to buy a certain stock with an unbelievably high return or providing you with illegal services like forging a receipt or taking a demanding school examination for you. These messages are only the tip of the dishonesty iceberg that has been plaguing our modern society.
In the sports field, many athletes desiring a record-breaking performance try illegal drugs; in the manufacturing industry, manufacturers expecting to lower costs choose to use cheap, inferior materials to make products; in the science community, researchers competing for some international award make up false experimental data and processes. It seems that people from all walks of life are making efforts to find "shortcuts" to solve problems.
Unfortunately, the consequence is that people become less trustful to each other. When seeing a fallen old lady ask for help, few passers-by would, even if she is honest, offer a helping hand in case the lady should accuse them of knocking her down so that she can demand a huge amount of money as compensation. Likewise, fewer pedestrians are willing to give money to beggars who they think are actually not poor in reality.
To improve the current situation, I think concerted efforts should be made. Public media may direct the public—by way of advertising, for example—toward honest behaviors. Parents are also important role models in educating the next generation to keep honest to one another.
