Turkey, Russia and China Make Georgia's Top Trading Partners in 2021

Photo: georgian service [retrieved from RFE/RL, edited]According to the preliminary data of the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), the external merchandise trade (excluding non-declared trade) of Georgia amounted to $14,315.6 million in 2021. The figure is 25.6% higher compared to 2020.
In particular, Georgia’s exports in 2021 equaled $4,242.3 million (26.9% higher), while the imports stood at $10,073.3 million (25.1% higher). According to Geostat, the negative trade balance was $5,831 million in 2021 and its share constituted 40.7% in external trade turnover.
Georgia’s exports by country groups looks as follows: CIS countries (47.6%), EU countries (16.9%) and other countries (35.5%). The top trading partners are China - $615.6 mln (14.5%), Russia - $610 mln (14.4%) and Azerbaijan - $531.7 (12.5%).
In terms of imports by country groups, Georgia’s imports looks as follows: CIS countries (28.1%), EU countries (22.9%) and other countries (49%). The top trading partners are Turkey - $1,823.7 mln (18.1%), Russia - $1,028.6 mln (10.2%) and China - $864.9 mln (8.6%).
Overall, the top trading partners by turnover are: Turkey - $2,145.8 mln (15%), Russia - $1,638.5 mln (11.4%) and China - $1,480.4 mln (10.3%).
Major commodities in terms of exports are: copper ores - $815.4 mln (19.2%), ferro-alloys - $477.4 mln (11.3%) and motor cars - $456.5 mln (10.8%).
Major commodities in terms of imports are: motor cars - $898.7 mln (8.9%), petroleum and petroleum oils - $822.5 mln (8.2%) and copper ores - $736 mln (7.3%).
