    今天经济学人上有一篇关于新闻自由的文章

    The global slump in press freedom

    首先文章标题中slump一词,

    slump:

    1. 倒下,倚,靠 to fall or lean against something because you are not strong enough to stand

    slump against/over/back

    eg: She slumped against the wall. 她身子一歪倚在了墙上。

    2. 暴跌 to suddenly go down in price, value, or number

    eg: The currency slumped to a record low. 币值跌到了历史低点。

    3. 趋势减弱 a sudden decrease in prices, sales, profits

    slump in

    eg:a slump in car sales

    在文章开头,出现了一句话:

    Illiberal regimes are clamping down on independent media across the world.

    不容言论的政治制度正在全世界范围内压制独立媒体。

    这句总结性的话,第一个词就表明了文章观点illiberal,

    illiberal: /ɪˈlɪbərəl/

    1. 不开明的,不容言论自由的 not supporting people’s rights to say or do what they want

    eg:illiberal and undemocratic policies 专制、不民主的政策

    2. 吝啬的,小气的 not generous

    regimes

    1. 政权 a government, especially one that was not elected fairly or that you disapprove of for some other reason

    eg:The regime got rid of most of its opponents. 这个政权除去了大部分政敌。

    2. 组织方法、管理体制 a particular system – used especially when talking about a previous system, or one that has just been introduced

    eg: Under the new regime, all sheep and cattle will be regularly tested for disease.

    clamp down 打压、压制

    eg: The police are clamping down on drink-driving offenders.

    警察正在打压酒后驾车的罪犯。

    clamp:

    1. 夹住 to put or hold something in a position so that it cannot move

    eg: She clamped her hands over her ears.

    2. 制裁、处罚 clamp sanctions/restrictions etc on somebody

    to put limits on what someone is allowed to do

    eg: The president clamped sanctions on the island after the bomb attack.

    总统在炸弹袭击后对该岛实施了制裁。
