hawker

【来源】
今天在魏剑峰微博看到这段文字,刚好又是Day4那个词,那就再来一次吧,当复习

外刊好词好句 这段对街头小贩存在意义的描写很有人情味:
Asia’s hawkers do not just provide cheap, delicious food for the masses. They also embody the beating heart of a national cuisine. Perhaps most important, they create a community: the chance for citizens of all classes to rub shoulders over a bowl of noodles swimming in fish broth.

【查词】
collins learner's dictionary
countable noun
You can use hawker to refer to a person who tries to sell things by calling at people's homes or standing in the street, especially when you do not approve of this activity.
[disapproval]
...as soon as she saw that it was a visitor and not a hawker or tramp at her door.

in British English:
noun
a person who travels from place to place selling goods

感想:查词这几天以来最开心的了,有偶遇的惊喜。对于我来说,单词就该这样,one bite at a time,然后下次不期而遇再来一口。

素谊:
今天看到的一段话,The heavy sentence completed the sensational fall from grace for a political princess who became South Korea's first female leader, but then went on to become its first president to be impeached when she was ejected from office a year ago.
刚开始不认识impeach这个单词,但是根据句意猜测应该是弹劾,之后再查字典。
impeach /ɪmˈpiːtʃ/

【解词】
来源于拉丁词impedicare,原意是to fasten the feet together

【释义/字典例句】
vt. formally charged with a serious crime in a special government court控告;弹劾
The governor was impeached for using state funds improperly.
【拓展】n. impeachment
He finally resigned in order to avoid impeachment.

【区别accuse, charge, impeach】

  1. Accuse is the most general word, and may be used in formal or informal, official or personal, contexts.
(accuse为通用词,常用搭配accuse...of...。例句:Then investigating committee accused the officer of wrongdoing./The man's neighbour accused him of playing his radio too loudly.)
  2. Charge, in this context, means to accuse formally, usually before a court; by extension, it means to accuse informally of a violation of some accepted standard.
    (charge指向法院提起的正式指控,也可以表示谴责某人违背某些行为准则,常用搭配charge...with...。
例句:The police charged the driver with reckless driving./ The candidate charged his opponent with evasion of the basic issues.)
  3. Impeach means to arraign a person (usually a public official) before a competent tribunal on a charge of treason or other high crime. In extended use, to impeach is to discredit or to call into question: to impeach a witness; to impeach a person's motives.
(impeach侧重于犯了叛逆罪或其他严重罪行而对其提起的指控,可搭配介词for。例句:He was impeached for abusing his power.)

from dawn to dusk 从早到晚
