Hello stranger,
Thank you for asking me to write a letter for you. You said you are now traveling around Australia alone with your dog. What a great adventure! I don't know your aim and reason for your exploration, but I do hope you would keep safe and sound along the trip and my letter could relieve the loneliness of your long travel.
While travelling alone, you must have met numerous strangers. What is your feeling about them? Of course, I think you must have different impressions on the different strangers you met on the road. It's hard to describe a general feeling towards the strangers. But for me, my feelings about the strangers are largely decided on the places where I am. When I was in big cities where are packed with so many people, the streets are so crowded that we have to walk side by side, I felt I was at distance with the strangers. In such circumstances, I didn't want to chat with them unless necessary. Even for familiars, I felt it’s not good to contact them without any reason, because everyone was so busy. In big cities, people tend to lock their innermost feeling in the deepest corner of their hearts. Maybe I am not the only person to feel like this. You see, there are so many people get psychological illness or depressed in crowded places. If people can open their hearts to each other, maybe they won't develop such illness.
But when I was travelling in the remote areas, when I walked for hours without seeing anyone, I would long to see people. When I did meet a person on the way, even if we didn't talk, I would give him/her a smile and feel warm and safe in my heart. I don't know whether my feeling belongs to the common human nature. As far as I know, the nomads whose neighbors are often living kilometres away would welcome anyone in need of shelter. City people would assume such shelter is dangerous, but strangely, harm caused by strangers' shelter seldom happens. Statistics show that the people in remote areas are easier to be happy than the city ones.
Isn't it strange? We are wary of each other when we are close in space whereas we are more open to the strangers when we’re so far away. So in my opinion, we need to take a distance to know people and to love each other. You said, you are now in Tasmania. I have been there for many years. It is the state in Australia with the least population. But I assure you, there has lots of scenic and wonderful places awaiting for your exploration. When you enjoy the views, when you count the stars under the huge arch, when you are amazed by the wonderful lives there, do you feel your love for human being is increasing? Love is a kind of precious feeling which is hard to be cultivated among the crowds. But you, who are now traveling along, have a great opportunity to cultivate it. So please enjoy. Hope you can both strenghten your body and refresh your mind after the trip.
