In 1929, three years after his flight over the North Pole, the American explorer, R.E.
Byrd, decided to fly over the South Pole. At first, Byrd and his men had no difficulty in
getting over the high mountains. But soon they ran into a serious trouble. After having
thrown out two heavy food sacks, Byrd and his men soared over the mountains by 400 feet. Byrd at last succeeded in flying over the South Pole.
