在日常生活中
我们都有过“想当然”的经历
也就是出于主观想象，
仅凭主观的推测就来断定，
以为事情应当如此。
那么问题来了
“想当然”用英语该怎么说呢？
有同学可能会说
想 = think
当然 = of course
“想当然”难道就是
think of course?
如果这样翻译
老外们是听不懂的
其实它的意思就是
think it is so - most probably it did not actually happen
I think it's so.=我想就是这样的，但是很可能想的情况并不是事实
我们经常指出某人“想当然”了，就是说他们胡思乱想就乱下结论，以为事情和结论是怎样就断定是什么样，但其实都没有经过仔细考量和实证。
这样一个假想、假定的过程也正好对应了英文中的一个单词
assume /əˈsjuːm/ v.
to accept something to be true without question or proof
假定，假设;臆断，想当然地认为
[ + (that) ] I assumed (that) you knew each other because you went to the same school.
你们不是上的同一所学校嘛?我还以为你们两个认识呢。
[ + to infinitive ] We can't assume the suspects to be guilty simply because they've decided to remain silent.
我们不能仅仅因为疑犯选择保持沉默就断定他们有罪。
We mustn't assume the suspects' guilt.
我们千万不能臆断犯罪嫌疑人有罪。
So you might assume that mobile phones know exactly where you are.
所以你想当然的认为移动电话可以定位你的所在。
另外也有一个短语
take for granted
to believe something to be the truth without even thinking about it
认为…是理所当然的
I didn't realize that Melanie hadn't been to college - I suppose I just took it for granted.
我不知道梅拉妮没上大学——我只是想当然地认为她上过了。
Don't take it for granted.
不要想当然。
You should never take anything for granted, Mr Carson.
