I figured out the only way to leave the home was to do the same thing Lucy did— finding a job. But the difficult thing for me was that that I was only eleven years old. I rode to the center of the town, where there were only a church, one post office and one gas station.
In the post office, I asked the owner if I could put on my card there. She asked me what I did it for? I said that I looked for a job. She said her daughter, Mary, had a baby to look after and asked when I was available. I replied anytime. So, I went babysitting on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning. Later, Mary’s friend also had a baby to look after. She introduced me to her friend. One day, a man passed the post office and complained to the owner that he couldn’t find a kid help him load the boxes and the owner recommend me to him. Therefore, from Monday to Friday in the morning, I went babysitting and in the afternoon I went to load the boxes.
Mary taught nursing in school and I learnt that she could play the piano. I only heard others said that she was professional. When I really heard it, it’s really amazing. I asked Mary instead of paying me money, she could teach me play the piano. Besides, she told me that her sister taught dance at weekends. She advised me to join it. Dancing with other children, I noticed that I had different figure and clothes from others. After the class, the teacher told me that I should wear tights. Thinking it was immodest, I was not willing to say yes and even thought other children were tiny harlots.
After telling mom what I should wear in the dancing class, my mom took me to buy what I needed. She also reminded me that I kept the clothes in my own room. I knew what she meant. One day mom invited dad to attend one performance I would give on weekends. Afraid that dad would be angry, she didn’t tell him it’s about dance until insisted asking. To our surprise, he said nothing about it.
Unfortunately, I ruined the performance. My dad was furious, not only because of my performance but also because of the way I was wearing. He thought it was really immodest. On the way home, dad blamed mom for that. Mom said she knew nothing about the clothes at all. And if she had known that clothes was so immodest, she wouldn’t have let me go to dance. Of course, I knew she was lying.
To make up for that, my mom found a singing teacher for me. Fortunately, I had a talent for it. After some time of training, the teacher encouraged me to perform in front of the public. Seconds before the performance, instead of being nervous, I thought of Tyler and the singing came naturally to me. After the performance, I was highly praised by the audience. My father was so pleased with the compliments that he didn’t even care if they were from the men he hated before. And he was even willing to spend a large amount of money supporting me to fight for a leading role in a play.
