文化自信与中国书法Culture Confidence and China Calligraphy

20世纪70年代，全球有一大批杰出的人文学者和科学家在西方文明的首都意大利罗马召开了一个讨论人类未来的大会。会议得出了结论：人类未来应当到两千年多年前的中国哲人孔子的思想中去寻找智慧。2566年前的9月28日，孔子来到人间，从此成为中华文化的恒久主角。今天，我们在中国首都北京的孔庙——这个自元代以来即为举国最神圣的国学殿堂里举行国学文化节书法展的开幕式，此时此地此节都有了特别的文化意味和历史感觉。作为中国书法的忠诚爱好者，我倡议：
In the 1970s, a large number of outstanding human culture scholars and scientists from all around the world held a conference in Rome, Italy, the capital of Western civilization, to discuss the future of mankind. The meeting reached a conclusion saying that humanity should seek wisdom in the thoughts of the Chinese philosopher Confucius which were formed more than two thousand years ago. On the 28th of September 2566 years ago, Confucius came to the world and became a permanent protagonist of Chinese culture. Today, we’re at the Confucius temple in Beijing, the capital of China – the most sacred hall of National Studies since the Yuan Dynasty, holding the opening ceremony of the National Studies Festival's Calligraphy Exhibition. This festival here and now has a unique cultural meaning and historical feeling. As a loyal lover of Chinese calligraphy, I propose:
——我们对中国书法引领中华文明实现伟大复兴要更加自信。作为中华文化的精华和精髓，中国书法就像皇冠上的明珠，是真正的明珠就应当让它闪光，我们应该负担起让东方书 法艺术重放异彩的神圣使命，让中国书法的笔墨写意成就一系列高妙的审美境界，树立为中华文化实现伟大复兴做出应有贡献的坚定信心。
——We should be more confident that Chinese calligraphy will lead the Chinese civilization to a great renaissance. As the essence of Chinese culture, Chinese calligraphy is like the pearl in the crown. It should be made to shine and we should bear the sacred mission of allowing the oriental calligraphy art to shine again. Let the freehand brushwork of Chinese calligraphy achieve a series of the exquisite aesthetic realm and build firm confidence to make due contributions to the great renaissance of Chinese culture.
——我们对中国书法本身的复兴要更加自觉。对中国书法的创作实践和理论研究要积极探索，博古通今，激浊扬清，发扬光大。要善于继承中国书法的优秀传统，把握中国书法的特有规律，精通中国书法的丰富技艺，吸收全球各时期、各艺术门类的营养和精华，突破中国书法发展的现实路径。中国书法是特别需要意志和思悟来表现实践者的忠诚和智慧的 。墨磨人，人磨墨；人欺笔，笔欺人。要有真成就，必下真功夫。我此次参展并且被孔庙国子监收藏的《人生三铭》文字不足千言，撰改的时间跨度覆盖了我近20年的青壮年岁 月；书法练习我则自3岁始，四十多年基本未曾间断，篆隶真行草五体都系统习过，仅三铭书写已近千通，毁作废纸不下九百，至今仅留存的几通，也不过表明我还是爬涉在书法 的不归路上。
——We should be more conscious of the revival of Chinese calligraphy itself. We should actively explore the creative practice and theoretical research of Chinese calligraphy. We should have both ancient and modern teachings to promote the great good ones and carry them forward. We must be good at inheriting the excellent tradition of Chinese calligraphy and grasping the unique laws of Chinese calligraphy. We should master the rich techniques of Chinese calligraphy, absorb the nutrition and essence of all the periods and all kinds of arts in the world and break through the realistic path of development of Chinese calligraphy. Chinese calligraphy especially needs the will and thought to demonstrate the practitioner's loyalty and wisdom. Ink wears people the same way as people wear ink; people deceive pen and then the pen will deceive people as well. If you want to achieve real success, you must work hard. The “Three Inscriptions of Life”, collected and exhibited here at the Confucius Temple and Imperial College Museum, have less than a thousand words, but the time span of writing and revising had nearly 20 years. It has covered the prime of my life. I have been continuously practicing calligraphy for more than 40 years since I was three years old. I have systematically studied all the five scripts as seal script, clerical script, standard script, cursive script and running script. Only the “Three Inscriptions” have been written nearly a thousand times and no less than 900 pieces of paper wastes have been destroyed. Only a few of them have survived, but it also shows that I am still climbing on the road of calligraphy.
——我们对中国书法代表的中华文化的建设要更加自强。要着眼中国正在实施大规模走出去，高质量引进来的战略，全面融入和推动世界经济和社会加快发展的大时代，开拓视野 ，技道并进，表现和创造开放盛世的正大气象、和而不同的博大胸怀、天人合一的乾坤大美！
We should improve ourselves in the construction of the Chinese culture represented by Chinese calligraphy. We must keep in mind that China is implementing the strategy of going out on a large scale and bringing in high-quality goods, full integration and promotion of the great era of rapid development of the world economy and society. We should broaden our horizons and advance our skills and culture. We should create an atmosphere of openness, have harmony in diversity and show a great beauty of the universe as we have harmony between man and nature!

This is the author's speech at the opening ceremony on the National Studies Festival's Calligraphy Exhibition at the Beijing Confucius Temple and the Imperial College Museum on September 20th, 2015. It has been included as the preface of "Culture Confidence and China Calligraphy---a famous contemporary Chinese calligrapher, Yin Tongjun 尹同君"---a calligraphy model Big Red Robe（one of China's top artbook publishing brand）published by the Tianjin People's Art Publishing House on December, 2017.
