主要讲述三苏父子进京所经历的事情，介绍长江三峡的风景与艰险，并介绍由此而写作的《南行集》的由来。

从瞿塘峡开始就是危险和刺激并存，并讲述了圣欧泉的传说，由所见风景反思是否值得放弃文明生活追求名利。紧接着进入八十公里的巫峡，讲述了神女峰与《神女赋》的关系。穿过波涛汹涌的东濡滩又来到人鲊瓮。出巫峡后来到秭归，讲述了秭归的风俗，如何辩识未婚妇女和已婚妇女，以及人们以打捞沉船，修木板为生计。下来便是黄牛山的奇石，然后是蛤蟆培，外形酷似青蛙头的大扁石。苏家在江陵下船改陆路，一路下来已写有一百多首诗，收在《南行集》。

二月抵京时，在仪秋门附近买了一栋花园住宅，接着分别讲述三苏的官职。最后讲述三苏的学术和写作声誉日渐增高。
