1. Why does Baby Suggs insisted on calling herself Baby Suggs instead of Jenny Whitlow?
First of all, Jenny Whitlow was the name which was on Whitlow's bill and of which even Baby Suggs herself had not heard before. Suggs was her husband's name and her husband always called her Baby instead of Jenny, which made her name Baby Suggs.
What's more, Baby Suggs was all she had left of the "husband". If she was calling herself some bill-of-sale name, her husband could not find or hear tell of her.
2. In the flash back, we can see the white girl-Amy’s various deeds toward Sethe. What do you think are reasons that Sethe named the new-born baby after Amy Denver? (except for the reason of helping Sethe with her baby delivering)
To begin with, Amy Denver, the whitegirl who helped Sethe get to lean-to as well as have her baby on a boat. Although she was an ordinary whitegirl to the most, Sethe could not make it without her companionship on the way of both to the lean-to and her baby delivering.
Moreover, Amy Denver was a freeman whom Sethe wanted her baby to become. It's a kinda symbolic name of freedom, which coloredpeople could not be able to have. Beside, before Amy left Sethe, she wanted Sethe to tell her baby that it is her, Amy Denver, who brought her to this world.
3. In the carnival, when Denver was surrounded by a crowed of people who pleased her enough to consider the possibility that Paul.D wasn't all that bad,why did Denver change her attitude towards Paul.D?
The three, Denver, Sethe and Paul D, went to the carnival, not holding hands but their shadows looked they were. When they stood together, watching the dance--that made the stares of other niggers, which Denver did not remember seeing in their faces. Kind and gentle. This made Denver think that Paul D was not that bad.
4. How did Denver change her attitude towards Paul D?
When Paul D came to Sethe and they were talking about "Sweet Home" and "your daddy" in a way that made it clear to Denver that both belonged to them but not to her, which made her hostile to Paul D. She kept asking how long he was going to hang around, hoping Paul D would leave her mother soon. She did not even want to go to the carnival with them, to doing anything to make the trip a pleasure. But when they stood together, watching the dance--that made the stares of other niggers, which Denver did not remember seeing in their faces. Kind and gentle. It is the first time when Denver changed her attitude toward Paul D, feeling that he was not that bad.
