科技发展史上，不免会出现一度被炒作得热火朝天的技术或概念，一旦炒作期过去，其发展会逐渐趋于平缓，甚至倒退。
但是，炒作也有其一体两面。一方面，炒作有助于短期内吸纳大量的资金，吸引大量的客户，推动技术发展，最终沉淀下来一些能够改变世界的企业。另一方面，炒作也可能因过于夸大技术前景，误导和欺骗投资者。这一弊端可能比较明显，例如，结果达不到预期，还有一些则比较微妙:过于关注某种特定技术，可能会限制新产品的发展。
处理好炒作有助于平衡其利弊。
