Every girl, no matter she admits it or not, is willing to marry a good husband, especially an ideal husband. What is an ideal husband? He earns the warmest applause, the best reputation or the inexhaustible features? Different people have different answers and Wilde wrote his answer in his novel My Ideal Husband. I luckily watch a movie which was adapted by his novel, and I am really impressed by a character called Lord Goring.
I have to admit that I do not like Goring at the beginning. He does not have a formal job but spends his life enjoying time with beautiful ladies. While in the end, I gradually like him, and even think that he is an ideal husband for me. The first scene of this movie is the sleeping Lord Goring and a curvaceous lady leaving his gorgeous bed as the curtain is pulling up. Like modern young people, he is uninhibited but he always follows the rules of common courtesy; like any other gentry, he holds power and treasure but he never does wicked deeds, and he is always a reliable and warm-hearted friend at least it seems to me. And the most important point is that he is an ideal husband.
Lord Goring and his father sat in carriage. Like any other parent, his father tried to persuade him getting married as soon as possible since Goring had been thirty-six. Goring did not show that he was impatient but begged his father to speak in a low voice because he pretended to be thirty-two all the time. This scene was impressive because this kind of problem still existed until today. And when I heard Goring’s words, I was sure that he had not fallen in love with anyone, just a playboy maybe. And when Robert Chiltern claimed his wrong standpoint at Commons which meant he was going to marry Mrs. Cheveley, he continued coughing at such a serious occasion, and his father beat his back hard to calm him down. That was really interesting. They behaved like ordinary father and son. What’s more, Goring’s father brought him to the study, told him with some words in earnest about work and marriage. When he came out the study, he obviously breathed a sigh with relief. He was also an exquisite gentleman. Every time he went out, he must wear swallow-tailed coat with a carefully chosen flower in the pocket. As a really gentleman, he always cared about other guests’ feelings.

Besides, he never does wicked things. Actually, he held some power as a Lord, but no one mentioned his imperfect past. I am willing to believe that he seldom does bad things. Though we can know that he always had fun with different women, which might leave audience a dissolute impression, he never get more benefits than his women maybe. What if all his girlfriends were as intelligent and cunning as Mrs. Cheveley? That might be very interesting because both of them would not be willing to fail in love. Another point is that, when Sir Robert had a quarrel with his wife, Lady Chiltern, this couple both turned to Goring for help. This indicated that Goring was really a nice person. And on parties, some guests would always surround charming Goring.

When Mabel fallen in love with Goring, Goring was not interested in her. This situation reminded me of Bai Xiuzhu and Jin Yanxi, two characters in a Chinese novel called Jin Fen Shi Jia. The girls were high-educated and loved men who did not love themselves, even though their family backgrounds were equal. Maybe girls always like that kind of men. Goring might not be sure that what kind of woman Mabel was, whether she was suitable to be his wife, so he always avoided meeting and talking with Mabel. He seemed to avoid being in trouble. While Mabel was a clever girl, she chose to treat him back with aloofness. I actually admire her behavior because an intelligent woman should not show weakness before the one she loved. Goring was a warm-hearted friend before Lady Chiltern, bit he was also indifferent before Mabel. Goring had nothing to fear because he did not love Mable. After Goring failing to keep on his appointment, Mabel woke up from her unrequited love. And also at that time, Goring realized that he might want Mabel to be his girlfriend, so he wandered at the hall and talked with statue of philosophers when Mabel misunderstood him. When both of them help Robert and Mrs. Chiltern become reconciled, Goring found that Mabel was the right one. It was really interesting that when Goring got down on one knee to make a Mable a proposal, Mabel asked him to tell a reason why he loved him. Goring took it as Mabel’s cause to refuse him and was ready to turn away. I nearly thought they were going to be apart from that on. In the end, the kiss made me sweet.

Some people may think that an ideal husband should be perfect, including having a perfect past. But everyone will do something silly, so we should focus on the present and future of the men and make sure that we meet our right one. Whether a husband is an ideal husband depends on how wives view it. And as our girls, being wives, we should give our men support when they face problems they cannot solve. Life is not always peaceful, and couple means they help each other spend the whole life. After misunderstand and obstacle, if we still love each other and tend to be together, then we can be sure the one is our ideal husband. Years ago I watched a movie called Corpse Bride, and the main character Victor said some words on wedding: with this hand, I will lift your sorrows. Your cup will never empty, for I will be your wine. With this candle, I will light your way in darkness. With this ring, I asked you to be mine. This kind of love is what I expect.
