I.  city change climate

cities change the climate around you. In the country there are trees, grass, lakes and streams. In hot summer, the trees, grass and streams cool the area around you, but cities are not cooled in these nature way.

Usually there are few trees and not much grass in the city. Cities are built of asphalt, concrete, iron and steel. when the sun shine the streets and buildings take in the heat, after sun set building throw off the heat into the streets. so once the sun set countryside cools off, but a city stay hot all night.

cities are hotter than countryside in winter, too.

when you stand near a car with motor running, you'll feel the heat. the heat comes from the gasoline burned by the engine. The process of burning gives off a lot of heat.

Carefully put your hand near a light bulb, then you can also feel the heat. The heat from electricity warms the air around your hand. Electricity creates a lot of heat, so many experts believe that cities would change the climate.

Still some experts argue that the air pollution stop the sunlight from reaching the air, less sunlight reaches the earth, the world become cooler.

Some other experts say the earth is getting warmer, because of lots of heat thrown off by cities. If cities change the climate, great changes would occur. The ice of South and North pole would melt, and this would make the ocean rise, cities near oceans would slowly be flooded, people living in those cities would have to move to high land or lower land.

and the lower land, it was to the place that Mr. Verne sent the hero of his book. the intrepid man came to a instinct volcano, then go down there by strong wind.

Many people will have heard of the deepest hole in the South Africa, but have only a vague idea what it is about. Barely scratches,  It is so deep, and so great is the heat at 10,000 feet that were it not for an elaborate air-conditioning system, the miners working there would be roasted.

when you get down there, you must say ' I shouldn't have been doing this. let out now!'

II. Multicultural society

Today I'd like to address the topic of "the United States as a multicultural society" as much as I understand, and in that connection, I'd like to say a few words about the implications of multiculturalism for cross-cultural communication.

Many people say that the United States is a "melting pod", while other say it is a "salad platter". In my view, rather than a "melting pod", the United States may be more accurately described as a "multicultural society", in which the acculturation is defined more in terms of "integration" than "assimilation".

A melting pot myth is never true. The United States has always been a heterogenous society with cohesion, based partly on mutual respect and partly on one group's values dominating all others. A salad platter analogy means that each element in the United States can maintain its unique taste and identity exist together to create a whole new one.

However some experts argue that the multiculturalism has not meant the integration of diverse cultures, but an acceptance by dominant ethic category of the exotic foods, dress and rituals of the cultural minorities.

I think that the debate over multiculturalism is essentially over whose values will be imposed. In a true multicultural society, the individuals from diverse cultures background exist without socially enforce power differences. But that is not that case, at least, with the United States.

There has never been a mono-cultural society. Each person is of many cultures simultaneously. One has a social identity, a school identity, a family identity, an identity from the friends one keeps, a sexual identity, religious identity, ans so on. Nevertheless we tend to be unconscious of other cultures, and much hostility is created by our ignorance of other cultures and the failure to recognize their existence.

In many societies there is hierarchy of status and power. The power elites need not to be the majority. The power elites are the individuals who have influence within political, social, legal, economic, and religious institutions. The power elites in the United States control both material resources and good of country and means and manners of production and distribution.

In America, when you speak of upper, middle and lower classes, you speak not of the national origin and ethnicity, but of power and control over material resource. The economic power in the Untied States today is largely held by the youthful, able-bodied white males. The whites in the America are conscious of the existence of white culture.  the White culture resulted from a synthesis of idea, values and beliefs inherited from the European ethic groups in the United States. The white culture is a foundation of American norms and organizations.

The dominant white culture includes the communication pattern of standard English, direct eye contact, limited physical contact and controlled emotion.

Non-dominant  ethic groups in the United States are supposed to follow that patter in one way or anther.

4. D4 和 D5 的听译练习

D4 中进英练习中难点:

a 集中出现; b 生态;

集中出现,用have occurred in the same time 表达

ecological environment 生态环境

D5 中进英练习中难点:

实力,坚持,继续坚持。。。宗旨,提高到

总体看中进英时,因为速记方便的因素,所以比较好处理;

反之,一个2分钟或者4分钟的英进中的练习,就让人要窒息,主要是这个熟练度的问题,英文的熟练度还是不够高,所以在速记方面就不及中文处理得快。

5. 摘出D4 和 D5 的精炼点
