The American archaeologists have made an interesting discovery after the exploration of the temple in an ancient city on the promontary of Ayia Irini. The city must have been affluent for it enjoyed a high level of civilization. Adorned with beautifully decorated
walls, houses—often three storeys high—were made of stone. Even a drainage system had been built in the city for a great many clay pipes were found beneath the narrow
streets. The temple which the archaeologist examined was used as a place of worship
from the fifteenth century B.C. until Roman times. In the most sacred room of the
temple, the archaeologists discovered that there were clay fragments of fifteen statues which proved to be goddesses and had, at one time, been painted. They were also
amazed to find that the head of one goddess was dated back to fifth century B.C. and
its body fifteenth century B.C. The statue of the goddess which was three feet hight had been reected by the archaeologists. With hands rested on her hips, she was wearing a full-length skirt which swpet the ground. Despite her great age, the goddess appeared
to be smart and graceful. But so far, her identity has been unknown to the
archaeologists.
