Edson Arantes do Nascimento（born 23 October 1940),[1]known asPelé, is a retired Brazilian professionalfootballerwho played as aforward. He is widely regarded to be the greatest player of all time.[13]In 1999, he was votedWorld Player of the Centuryby theInternational Federation of Football History & Statistics(IFFHS).[14]The same year,France Footballasked their formerBallon d'Orwinners to choose the Football Player of the Century; they selected Pelé.[15]In 1999, Pelé was elected Athlete of the Century by theIOC, andTimenamed him in their list of100 most influential people of the 20th century.[16]In 2013 he received theFIFA Ballon d'Or Prix d'Honneurin recognition of his career and achievements as a global icon of football.[17]i

 Pelé began playing forSantosat 15 and theBrazil national football teamat 16. He won threeFIFA World Cups:1958,1962and1970, the only player ever to do so; and is theall-time leading goalscorerfor Brazil with 77 goals in 91 games.[25][26]At club level he is also the record goalscorer for Santos, and led them to the1962and1963 Copa Libertadores.[19][27]Pelés electrifying play and penchant for spectacular goals made him a star around the world, and his club team Santos toured internationally in order to take full advantage of his popularity.[28]
